About us

Summit Point School offers a unique learning opportunity for your dyslexic child, helping them achieve educational success, develop independence, social skills and self-esteem.

Multi-sensory approach

We use a multi sensory approach, using auditory, visual and kinesthetic methods, across the whole curriculum. Careful analysis of data, from psychometric testing and specific language assessments, ensures our approach remains personalised for each individual student.

Most mainstream teaching methods use sight or hearing, however dyslexic people may have difficulties with either visual or auditory memory, or both, despite having satisfactory hearing and sight. Vision may be affected by difficulties with tracking or visual processing. For example, some dyslexics find it hard to follow a sequence of words on one line and may lose their place.

Research suggests that by involving more of the senses, especially touch and movement, the dyslexic brain creates more memories supporting the visual and auditory memory pathways.

  • With instructional learning our primary areas of focus are literacy and numeracy
  • These are delivered through an explicit, structured, multi-sensory approach
  • Students work in small, well-matched groups rather than traditional year levels
  • Instruction covers the development of phonology (spelling), morphology (grammar), semantics (vocabulary), syntax (sentence structure), and writing mechanics. The curriculum moves through the writing of a phrase, sentences and paragraphs; first in isolation and then in context.

Learning program with a purpose

We employ an inquiry approach to learning. Inquiry based learning, is a teaching method in which students gain knowledge and skills by working for an extended period of time to investigate and respond to an authentic, engaging, and complex question, problem, or challenge.

  • Your child will help to co-create their learning experiences
  • Your child will learn to take ownership over their growth as a learner
  • Progress is measured against your child's individual profile: not against their peers or National Standards
  • Literacy and numeracy are provided through explicit daily workshops that cater for the needs of the group
  • Our multi-sensory language programme provides your child with the support that they may have historically received through one-to-one tuition
  • Additional workshops operate throughout the week to support your child as needed

The Summit Point curriculum has been developed using an integrated, inquiry learning model. When correctly implemented this develops creativity, independence, critical thinking skills and problem-solving abilities.
