Structure of observed learning outcomes (SOLO)

The structure of observed learning outcomes (SOLO) taxonomy is a simple and reliable model for the three levels of understanding.

  • Surface
  • Deep
  • Conceptual

The Summit Academy uses a unique classroom-based approach to help change the way students’ think about their own learning outcomes.

This ‘learning to learn’ requires the student to think about their own strengths and weaknesses¬† and to make thoughtful decisions on what to do next. They will ask themselves:

  • What am I learning?
  • How is it going?
  • What do I do next?

Using the SOLO method, students begin to understand that their learning is the result of hard work using effective strategies. They are able to monitor their own progress and decide on their next learning goals.
